Throwing out the bathwater

Water saving Mercy Midwives and mothers throwing out the bathwater onto the Family Birth Centre's courtyard garden

The Family Birthing Centre in Heidelberg uses a fair bit of water because every delivery suite has a large ensuite bathroom. These is also a giant circular bath that women can use during labour and the babies need a bath or two before leaving the hospital.

The Centre provides a 'homelike' environment, which includes a private courtyard garden. The garden was beginning to look a bit sad after months of dry weather. So the environmentally friendly midwives at the Centre put two and two together and now bath water is being siphoned onto the garden instead of being lost down the plug hole.

Deb Sloggett, a midwife at the Centre explained, "Midwives and women are a great team, not only in birthing but in helping plan a future for their children. Our garden will grow and our women and children will have a garden to enjoy - true Mercy values of teamwork and innovation".
