Work starts on Parkville aged care complex
Construction of our new aged care complex in Parkville kicked off with the demolition of buildings that had been used by athletes during the 2006 Commonwealth Games.
Victoria's Major Projects Minister, Theo Theophanous swung a sledge hammer to start the demolition.
Building work should start within a few months and when completed the complex will include 140 aged care beds and up to 52 assisted living units, each boasting energy and water-efficient six-star energy ratings.
The new complex will help meet the growing need for residential care for disadvantaged older people in north and west Melbourne.
John Ballard, our CEO said, "It's exciting to see the project going ahead on schedule. The inner west and northern communities will have access to quality aged care in an integrated, socially inclusive community of private and social housing."
The facility is a partnership between Mercy, Local and State Governments and the local community health and support services.
"It is appropriate this work began today," John said, "as it is the 150th anniversary of the arrival of the Sisters of Mercy in Melbourne."
