Gerhard Herbst's Work Honoured

A 99-year-old resident of a Bendigo nursing home has been admitted into the Design Institute of Australia's Hall of Fame.

German-born Gerhard Herbst emigrated to Australia during WWII and became an art director at Prestige Limited in Melbourne.

Mr Herbst was involved in the development of designs and printing manufacture that would revolutionise the look of Australian fabrics and fashion by using European inspired designs on mass produced textiles.

He later became a well known and respected international lecturer, working at Melbourne Technical College and RMIT.

Mr Herbst also featured as a regular guest lecturer at the Pratt Institute in New York and served on the Standing Committee for Visual Communication at the University of Melbourne.

Family and members of Australia's industrial design sector travelled to Bethlehem Home for the Aged yesterday to see Mr Herbst presented with his award.
