Shared Maternity Care Workshop Supports GPs and Midwives

On Saturday 21 August Mercy Hospital for Women hosted the Shared Maternity Care Workshop, an annual event for GPs and midwives who provide shared maternity care in the community.

The workshop provides a pathway for GPs to reaccredit as Shared Maternity Care Affiliates; it also enhances communications between health professionals working in the shared maternity model.

This year 140 attendees had the opportunity to hear from highly credentialled speakers Dr Martien Snellen, Dr Wei Qi Fan, Dr Louise Kornman and Dr Bernadette White who gave an interesting update on shared maternity care across Melbourne.

Mercy Hospital for Women would like to thank all the speakers for their contribution and ongoing commitment to GP education and community care.

Collaborative support for GPs

In 2007, The Royal Women's Hospital, Western Health, Northern Health and Mercy Hospital for Women formed the Shared Maternity Care Collaborative which is committed to providing a Shared Maternity Care workshop each year at different locations in metropolitan Melbourne.

The collaborative underpins the relationship between 770 GP Shared Maternity Care Affiliates and the four hospital providers of maternity services in the region. In addition to education, the Shared Maternity Care Collaborative co-ordinates accreditation and reaccreditation of Shared Maternity Care Affiliates GPs and is currently reviewing the Guidelines for Shared Maternity Care Affiliates (2002).

The GP Liaison Unit at Mercy Hospital for Women is an endorsed provider of education with the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners, supporting GPs to meet their professional education requirements.
